Should we have reputation?
Reputation Now DEActivated
Most of you have seen reputation (or something similar) on other message boards. Well, now FOG has it. To try to ensure people don't abuse giving out reputation points, members have to wait 5 minutes between giving reputation out. I'm sure you guys can handle it, but just make sure that you don't turn this into some form of a popularity contest. Also, please ONLY give negative reputation if the person is deserving. If a member disagrees with you on something, that is not deserving of negative reputation, for example. Negative reputation points should only be dealt if someone says something hurtful, does something against our rules, or acts in a way that would, in essence, be deserving of punishment.
One point of positive reputation is given per every + you give out, and one point of negative reputation is given for every - you give out.
Reputation is used mainly to show how well a member is at providing good feedback and making replies or posts that are interesting, have thought and effort put into them, are helpful, or are just plain good! Role-play posts too can be deserving of positive reputation if you read one that you really like.

I gave you 1 Reputation. The reason: Because you started it.
It's only fair.

You don't like popularity contests?
Or... something else, but chances are Heyseuss is right.
Fate - Do you think you could make some rules about reputation, such as "Only add + if..." And so on...

Erm... timer is not effective.... I've heard cases of people with many accounts using appear offline on secondary accounts to enhance their score.....
Typically this crashes and burns in a hellish firestorm..... and there are a billion different ways that can happen....

I must disagree with this addition. It's introduction is meant with good intentions, but the truth is this will be a double-bladed tool. A popular gimmick on one side...
and a perfect weapon of vengeance for another. The meter practically dictates what people should think of us based on the opinion of a few or, even, one (granted they have enough time and patience to do this) person rather than depend on the individual's belief or perspective. It forces the mind to narrow itself. You may think that this is an extreme possibility, but believe me that nothing good comes out of giving guns to children.
I personally add a veto to this addition.

Apparently, I either broke a rule a deserved punishment already or said something that was mean, and as far as I am aware, that is not the case, so I can already see that this is going to be abused. Please, read what I said here about the reputation and what to give it out for.
I know that reputation can lead to some drama, so I've created a poll to get your opinions on it. If you want it to stay, then vote yes, but if you don't like it, then please vote no. If the majority don't like this and think it's just a bad idea, then I can easily get rid of it.
If we decide to keep the reputation, I will create a rule about it that will help explain what to give reputation for. If people have no intention of obeying the rules though on this feature, then clearly we are not adult enough to handle something of this nature, and I will gladly get rid of it.

Fate, do not take my comment personally. I know you mean well and I am not stating that you have offended anyone or anything or even INTENDED to. I just want to, like you, avoid drama and I think this is a bad idea.
EDIT: Oh, wait... now I see your point. OK, someone voted against you.
X_X *promises it was NOT him*

Fate, I've seen this before, and I saw how effective it can be when people are willing to use them as a tool of reference, kind of like, "oh, enough people thought so-and-so did things right, maybe I can ask him for help?"
Also, I think that was a mistake on Howler's part, otherwise, TWO people gave you negatives.

Re: Reputation Now DEActivated
Maybe you should make a system of reputation whereby only admins can give out points.
A "Reputation Point Request", where you say I want this guy to have X many points for this epic post he did IC/because he finished this Roleplay nicely.
That way, it doesn't turn into a flame war.
I gave Fate 1 plus.

Re: Reputation Now DEActivated
I like howler's idea of admins & mods being in charge of the points. Is that possible?
Admins & mods don't need a reputation--they're already the Ones We Go To For Help. ^_^
If it's always up to the admins--who are watching everything anyway--then everything will be a lot more fair, and accurate.

Re: Reputation Now DEActivated
Oh, sorry Howler, I went on the assumption that you were the only one to give a rep point. Sorry.
As to the Admins being a middle man in the process, I think it would kind of defeat it. Think, if YOU think the person deserves a rep point, but the ADMIN doesn't, then he or she can simply ignore your request. That's kind of unfair because the Rep points are really based on the giver's opinion, and it should only be an "a to b" transaction, not "a to b via c."

I do like the way it's attached to posts.
I guess what I'm really afraid of is random people abusing the system and giving me negative points.
Should there be a requirement before you're allowed to give Rep points, perhaps? Say, once you get 100 posts? n00bs will be weeded out before then.

Re: Reputation Now DEActivated
Is there a way to make it so that you know who gives you the reputation points? That way people will be more wary about giving them out. While I personally dislike the reputation system in general, I do think it would work a bit better if you could see who was giving out points. Fate, for example, would know who already gave out negative points to her for no reason whatsoever.

Re: Reputation Now DEActivated
I wish I had more control over the reputation, but sadly all I can really do of any relevance is turn it on and off. I do like the idea of just the Admins or the Admins and Mods being able to give out reputation, as that does seem to fit better in their jobs. It is not possible to do that, however.
I also can't control seeing who gave you the reputation either. It's really a very limiting feature.
I think, for now at least, it's safe to assume that this really isn't a good feature, and that most people would like to see it gone. Onenitedrive also agrees that it is probably best to avoid something like this, since it's really hard to moderate over a reputation system, especially when you can't tell who gave out the reputation (and thus can't determine who brakes the rules, if and when they are broken). So, I will be removing it.

Yeah, if all that can be done is switch it on or off, I agree it's probably best off.

I always thought the Karma feature on Proboards was odd, so I'm glad we don't have that craziness here.
