Cartographer (I Make Maps)

Post by Stion Gyas on Thu Aug 13, 2009 5:11 pm

I make fantasy maps for RPs from time-to-time, and I love it. Probably the only art I'm anywhere near decent at. Because I love to make them, and I have fun doing it, I'm extending my services to anyone who needs/wants a map for their RPs, free. That's right, free.

Guidelines:
- Patience is a virtue.
- I go by order of post.
- Most of the map is hand-drawn. And then it is inked, erased, scanned and Photoshopped, so the process is a... well, it's a process.
- Upon request I'll show you the map at whatever stage o the process it is in.

Spoiler:

Name: (The name of the world.)
Size: (Map size. The biggest I'll do is 4 sheets (8.5 x 11) of paper arranged in a (2 x 2) square.)

Continent 1: (Name.)
Location: (General location and size (Small, medium, large.).)
Features: (Major features.)
- Mountain Ranges:
- Rivers:
- Forests:
- Terrain: (Things like plains, marshes, deserts, bays, etc.)

Continent 2: (etc.)

Examples:
Ril-Draqque - The first map I made. I've outdated that process and am now using a much faster, cleaner and better-looking process.

Unnamed - Just an example of my mountain style.

MY NEW BEST FRIEND!

I LOOOOOOVE MAPS!!!!

Hyper

I actually make maps, too, but your method is awesome.
I don't think I'd have the patience to draw the little mountains and trees.

Oh? Those mountains are horrible. I just finished a map... I hope I saved it. One second.

EDIT: Here: http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r399/Gwywir/Corvinia004.jpg

No colors because I already botched it. I forgot to put frigging trees in the original drawing, and the gap between the mountains aren't big enough. Tomorrow I'm going back to square one with it.

So how does the requesting process work? Is there a template you wish us to use?

I always end up using MS Paint, using the spray can for mountains and trees. Laughing
Prime example is the map I made for Sephiris: the Price of Peace. It was made like that, though I spruced it up with a few little tricks.

I used to draw maps all the time! xD Kinda makes me want to start up again.

You've got a neat way of making mountain ranges.

You can give me any form of template you'd like. If you think you really need a set one I'll put one in the first post.

Thanks Kalon. They're a pain in the butt, too. ;o

Hmmmm... how would you feel about making a planet Earth that is vastly different from the original? I realize it would be a lot more complex, but it would also be infinitely easier (what with Earth's geography being written down a thousand times over)

So, whatcha say?

Well, I'd have a little trouble fitting all of Earth onto four sheets of 8.5" x 11". What do you need it for?

Name: I'll leave that (as well as the rest of the naming) to you. Surprise me.
Size: Let's go ahead and do the biggest. I like BIG maps.

Continent 1:
Location: Large - North-East hemisphere.
Features: Mountainous in north. Plentiful vegetation. Various rivers.
- Mountain Ranges: 2
- Rivers: various - actual number up to you
- Forests: Several surrounding the mountain ranges, but one or two overlapping some major rivers.
- Terrain: Mix in all the above and you've got your terrain.

Continent 2:
Location: Medium - General Western hemisphere.
Features: Mountainous in the center with a large valley in the very middle, allowing for a capital city.
- Rivers: 1 - flowing right down the center of the continent; passing through the center the of the valley.
- Forests: One in the valley; engulfing the foot of the mountain range (as if making a nice, green circle. Various small forests outside of the range.
- Terrain: Mostly plains outside of the center mountain range, with forests dotting it. Lakes would also be nice.

Continent 3:
Location: Medium - General southern hemisphere.
Features: A large desert in the north, with a rugged mountain range separating the sands from the bitter snow desert in the far south.
- Rivers: Zip.
- Forests: Zip.
- Terrain: In the north lies a dry desert, like the Sahara. But a mountain range stretching from the west coast to the east coast, lies between it and a desert with a polar opposite climate (there will be a supernatural history to this odd clash of weather).

Any other outstanding features are up to you. If you could, also place kingdoms, cities, and forts on the map. The names and locations are up to you, of course.

Thanks in advance. Very Happy

My alternate-future Earth. Details can be found here:

http://www.footstepsofghosts.com/writing-and-journalism-f9/age-of-godhood-universe-compendium-t818.htm

It's a VERY big project and you'd probably have to ask me for exclusive details here or over PM, so I won't really ask you to undertake this if you're up for a huge challenge.

Although, you could very much simplify it... you could even edit an existing map of the world to make it easier. That would even work best, methinks.

I'll think about it, Adrius, but I'm very sure that the map will be larger than my four page limit. I'll PM you when I've made up my mind.
