Updates 5/12/2011

I decided the Polls subforum needed to go. There simply wasn't enough need for that to be its own separate thing, so I moved all the topics that were in it into their rightful places.

Also, we now have a subforum in the role-playing section where all (presumably dead) role-plays that have been around for over 6 months will go. This is currently set up to be automatic, and so should happen within the next 24 hours (as it checks daily for thread age). If you do not wish your role play(s) to be moved there, please let me know.

Lastly, you now can add descriptions underneath your topic titles.

EDIT AGAIN: I also just lowered the stakes to be raised to the rank of a Caligoan, since now one has yet accomplished it yet. All you need now is to have at least 3,000 posts and 1 concluded role-play (as opposed to 3500 posts and 3 completed RPs).

Alright, so I realized I was wrong in thinking I could set it up so that role plays could automatically be moved to the Ghost Town subforum when they reached a certain age. I think, for now at least, we will just leave all role-plays in their original areas.

I do have a question though for anyone that might know the answer. What happened to all the role-plays in the Caligo section?

They appear to just have disappeared. I really have no idea where they have gone. That's just strange.

I hope the pruning tool can be figured out as well as the mystery of the Caligo role-plays.

From what I've read about the pruning, you must create a forum named Basket first for it to work, and it has to be set so that it is not viewable by members (which defeats the purpose of having a forum for dead role-plays), and then topics can automatically be moved there. I'll try and get more info on this when I'm back home.

Are you sure the Caligo threads weren't "pruned"? I noticed that the casual and advanced IC threads are smaller than they used to be (there are four+ pages in OOC, but one in IC...) It seems that all IC threads six months and older have been moved. Do you still have the ghost town folder? Or the "basket"?

Actually you can designate which forum is the "basket" in the general configurations section of the CP. The permissions can be customized like any other forum. Give it a shot when you get back home.

Glad I still have my memory of that God-aweful control panel. Haha!

Out of curiosity, was it ever figured out what happened to the older roleplays? Are they still somewhere on the site where we can't see them..?

Lara, I looked through the log and it doesn't show that anyone moved or deleted them. Somehow they have just disappeared. I believe the topic/post limits of Forumotion were reached and the older posts were removed.

As far as I know, the only way we could retrieve them would be to roll the forum back to when they were removed which would cause us to lose anything done since then.

I wonder why they weren't cleaned out of the OOC threads then. Or any of the general discussion. Why would forumotion only do that to the IC threads?

What Ryona said; that's what has me really confused.

If they truly are gone, that leaves me extremely disappointed because if I had known they'd disappear, I'd have saved the posts from one of the roleplays I was in.

After thinking about it, I looked at the dates some forums were cut off at. Unfortunately the only explanation I see is that something went wrong when we tried to implement the auto-pruning. Which was suppose to move old role-plays to a "Ghost Town" forum. However, Fate said that nothing was ever moved to the Ghost Town forum and the log doesn't show that they were deleted. I'm really sorry you guys We never set it to delete anything. I don't know how that could have happened. I wish I had figured it out sooner so I could roll back the forum to a backup, but it was almost a week ago now and we'd lose everything over the past week.

No, it should not continue to do that. I think we're going to stay away from trying to set up any auto-pruning in the future.

You know, my post count never went down...if they were deleted you think all of our post counts (at least those of us with many dead IC role plays) would have dropped. I don't know if it means anything, but I thought I would mention it.

Post counts don't usually drop from what I've seen (at least on other forums). You made the post; it just isn't there anymore.

I was actually wondering about that, Ryona. Lara, I agree with you they don't usually go down from what I've seen either. However, I read on the forumotion help forums that apparently they are suppose to go down when pruning moves things to a "basket". It's definitely odd, but in the past I never counted on forumotion features to work properly...

Well that's a bit of a bummer. Personally, I recommend that authors begin to archive their own threads in case such an incident happens again in the future. You never know what those idiots over at eToxic may think of next. Every time they implement an update, they do it without the consent of, notification to, or regard for the end-user. Was anyone online here when they recently implemented their new WYSIWYG text editor? Oh boy, that was a big freaking screw up!

No, unfortunately (or fortunately) there have not been any role plays at all that have been finished yet.

I personally say that we save all the IC posts that have been made within the past week and a half to two weeks (just to be safe) and revert to the saved state. After which, the saved posts can be reposted promptly. There were A LOT of RPs to simply allow to go missing...

Agreed. A quick back up and roll back should solve the issue, right?

I'm sorry, but unfortunately the only way to possibly get those role-plays back would be to go back EXACTLY to how things were back when we had them. That would mean not only erasing every single post that has been made since then, but also deleting all the new members that have joined as well. I really, really wish that we still could get those RPs without having to do that, but Forumotion can be very limiting.

Please, please, please do not roll back. I'm glad it's not possible and I'm very sorry that so many RPs were lost, but I don't want to lose anything else.

I think we should put a poll up and let all the active site members decide whether or not we roll the site back.

If we decide to do so, everyone would have to save the posts they've made and some would have to re-register (myself included).

If not, everything stays the same and we mourn the loss of some threads.

I figure that might make things fair enough...maybe? possibly?

It's not worth it. It sucks that so much was lost, but rolling back means you're now punishing - and permanently risking - what other people have done on this website to save roleplays that were, above all, inactive. None of them were completed, Fate says, and I remember going through some of the earlier pages of roleplays out of curiosity, where I saw that while a few had four or even six pages, the vast majority barely broke two.

Those roleplays may have been inactive but that was still people's writing. Sure, some never made it past the first page but I was wanting to resurrect the idea of a few of the one on one roleplays I had from my other account and now I can't do that.

How about, instead of crying about what was lost, we actually try not to do anything else that'll possibly get us to lose more of those nice things that we cherish and love and worked so hard on. Yeah, let's go for that idea.

The specific ones I want are gone though...
I still think a poll would be best.
