Dark Souls

Post by Artorius on Wed Nov 23, 2011 3:47 pm

So, I saw a lot of love for Skyrim in its thread, and I just wanted to highlight what I think is one of the sleeper hits of the year- From Software's Dark Souls. From the second I slipped my copy into my PS3 and witnessed the opening cinematic, I knew I was in store for a great game.

First, the open world is beautiful. It has pretty decent graphics and each location is unique and a work of art. The game really is seamless in the connection of each location. Secret entrances encourage exploration and show the continuity of the world. Second, the enemies are pretty awesome. Basic enemy designs leave a lot to be desired, but mini bosses and demons(the real bosses) have beautiful designs. Finally, this game is brutal. It will punish and frustrate you to no end. However, once you get the hang of it you can limit deaths substantially. Of course, since I played Demons Souls, the learning curve was much friendlier to me. However, Dark Souls is harder than Demons Souls in a few respects.

Has anyone else discovered this great game?

I've read about both Dark Souls and Demon Souls and while they seem interesting, I'm one of those stuck-up PC users and don't own a gaming console. It's a shame...but I call it the price of my principles Wink

Still, would be interesting to see if any others have tried it out, the more solid RPG"s out there - the better!

I fully agree with that statement Blackrock, and I'm sorry that you're missing out on such a great game. I absolutely adore the franchise and what the developers have done with it. Saying this, maybe they should give some love to the PC in the future. They developed an Xbox version this time around, so maybe the PC isn't far off.

Beat it a few weeks ago. Demon's Souls was easily the best game of 2010, and Dark Souls was a great successor to the series. My only qualm was the multiplayer's overly complex and separated game play. I really wanted to play with a few of my friends but it was basically impossible because of the segregated servers and no way to tell which server you're on.

I agree with that complaint. The multiplayer was a little complicated but a lot of it had to do with your covenant. The best covenant for co-op is Princess' Guard. FYI. Covenants are essentially for PVP and co-op. I found when I was with Princess' Guard, I was able to co-op with a greater frequency. So maybe that would help if you're all a part of the same covenant. Besides that, I heard a rumor that friends cannot co-op with one another.
