Small! small, small... small... smaaaall

The images in posts should automatically resize also. No more big images taking up the forum. They have links above them to show full size.

Wait, what?
At what point to they automatically resize? 640px width?

I'm not sure what it is -- however big our forum width is. (Axiom might know.)

Whenever a picture doesn't fit into the box you post in because it is too wide, it'll just automatically resize to fit, but then you can click on the link as well to view it full size.

They resize to 540px. I chose that size because it's the approximate width of a post at 1024x768 resolution.

I believe this only works with BBCode image posting, not html.

HTML code can be resized through the code itself by using the width and/or height portion of the code:

Code:
<img src="direct link here" width="pixel number here" height="pixel number here">

I'm really glad you did that for the BB Code. You have no idea how happy it makes me that I no longer have to copy the link and paste it into a new tab to see it properly.

Does it work that way for signatures, too, or just images in posts?

Awesome, thanks for posting that HTML code, Kathryn. Smile

I know, right? Before, whenever you posted an image that was too long, it always got cut off, so it was really annoying. I asked Axiom about it to see if there was anything he could do, and he said that that was in the hands of Forumotion, but he did a little research and discovered that just recently Forumotion made that a possibility! (Of course, they never tell you these things.)

Yep, it's actually always worked for signatures as well. Axiom made it so if your signature is bigger than our rules state they can be (700 x 200), they'll automatically resize. (We just have it in the rules that they have to be that size so people are aware they aren't going to get any bigger than that.)

It's really helpful though that Axiom was able to do that, since that means we never have to issue out warnings like a lot of other message boards because of signature size.

I think they resize horizontally and vertically... :/
At least it has a quick reduce/enlarge button.

We can get around it using HTML, you say? Very Happy
*tests*

Hm, guess you can't. *sigh*

I don't suppose there's a way to have it know how many pixels it is at any time and resize it to that?
Like if on the current display it's 640, it resizes to 640, but if you zoom in so that it's 500 or zoom out to 700, it'll resize to those values instead of always 540?

Whenever I was at a smaller resolution, I just zoomed out. :/

I just noticed:
In fate's WoW artitified thread, there are three options: Reduce, Enlarge, and See Fullsize.
Does this mean Enlarge only enlarges to the current forum width?
If so, can't we just have them all on the Enlarge setting? Very Happy

Edit edit:
I just tested this by zooming in and out, and it does work! Very Happy

Try zooming out or having a widescreen for this one and click Enlarge.

Kalon, I'm having a hard time understanding what you're saying. XD I'm having Axiom respond to this.

As far as I can tell, we can't automatically have images set to the Enlarged size, since that's just the way this works. Enlarge makes it fill up the whole space you have to post in though, so it will show the image as big as it can be seen on the forum. However, if the image is still bigger than that, then it'll allow you to view it full-size as well.

It really doesn't have anything to do with your own personal resolution.

I think you're over analyzing it a bit...

It can't change based on an individuals' resolution. It's a set size that I picked so that images aren't always huge when you load a post.

The images will be sized down and maintain proportion. Either the proportion of the image or the dimensions entered in HTML. If you mess with the proportion in HTML like you did in that last image (you took an image that was 640x614 and made it 1000x200) of course it will look screwy.

For example, an image that is 640x480 will be reduced to 540x405 and 480x640 will be reduced down to 405x540. You can click enlarge to see a bigger size and if the image is big enough, there will be a link to see the full size.

I stand corrected about posting images with HTML. If you mess with things enough, there's almost always a way to break them.

So... Is there a way to make it so it only resizes one of the dimensions to insure that the smaller image isn't stretched looking when it's been resized?

For instance, if an image is 640x480, could it be set so that ONLY the 640 portion is shrunk? The smaller pixelage should automatically shrink with it, so it'll look better.

Re: Big! Big, Big, Big

It keeps the proportion, yes.
Let me try again. ^_^

Reduce goes to 540 width. Enlarge fills up the forum width. Resolution or Zoom gives you more or less width. Enlarge fills the forum width no matter how much you have. If you have less, it'll enlarge less. If you have more, it'll enlarge to the maximum width or to the image's full size, whichever comes first. If it can't Enlarge to full size within your space, it'll have a View Fullsize option.

My question is, is there a way--using this feature or some other techy trick--to have the effects of Enlarge without having to have the label at the top and click Enlarge.

In other words, can we make it so that overlarge images resize according to forum width, as opposed to an arbitrary value?

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, Kathryn. If only the 640 side changes, the image would be distorted. What it does is it takes the longer side and makes it 540. Then the shorter side changes accordingly.

I got ya, Kalon. The simple answer is no. This is just a setting in the forumotion admin panel. It has an area to enter what size you'd like images to be reduced to and that's it.

---

The issue was: images too large for the forum were being cut off. Plus loading a thread with a bunch of huge images is kind of annoying. I looked it up and found forumotion had added this feature and decided to try it out. In my opinion, smaller images with a button to enlarge are better for a forum. If you happen to use a resolution such as 1024x760 the images should just fit in a post.

Okay... Let me try to word this more clearly...

Let's use the HTML image code I provided... Let's say that had an image that was 1000x670 pixels... If I typed something like:

Code:
<img src="direct link here" width="500">

the width of 1000 pixels would become 500, but the height of 670 would not remain 670. It would resize to become proportionate to the newly changed width.

Does FoG make it proportionate, or does it resize both the width and height to set parameters which could cause stretches, and if it does the latter, would there be a way to fix it?

Let's give it a try.

Code:
<img src="http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h377/axiomawaits/FoG/sample.jpg" width="600" />

That image was originally 1200x800. The HTML sizes it down to 600 width (and 400 height). The forum sized it down to 540x360.

Code:
<img src="http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h377/axiomawaits/FoG/sample.jpg" />

This is the same image without using the HTML width attribute.

Thanks Axiom! Smile
I figured there probably wasn't a way to have our cake and eat it too, but it couldn't hurt to ask. ^_^

I guess I'll just have to post 540's from now on or get used to seeing the label at the top. Not sure which route I like less, for role-plays. Hmm
(oh man, Emoria... *goes to check* bummer, just a little bit over... )

Edit:
Yeah, I'll just have to do 540's for in character and deal with the labels for out of character. Just can't stand to see it in character. *sigh*
I agree with the logic and everything; it's perfect for OOC threads and all the general forums; it'll just take a bit of adjusting for all my in character images. Smile

This feature has (hopefully) temporarily stopped working, as Forumotion screwed something up with their Javascript. Doh So...yay. Another Forumotion mistake. So it's in their hands for whenever they decide to get it working again.
